How to make a skein?

Can you make one without a special tool? I dyed some wool with kool aid and would like to take some pics before I use it. Balling it up just isn't as pretty.

Re: How to make a skein?

I like to put two chairs upside down and facing each other so the the part that sits in the crook of your knee is touching, and the legs are pointing up and away from each other. Does that make sense? LOL Then I wrap the yarn around one leg from each chair and just keep winding. Once it's all wound, I remove, twist tightly, then let it twist back on itself. Voila! A skein! I tuck the ends into each other to hold the twist.
Clear as mud right?
Good luck!

On the first twist tightly - is that twist tightly like you're wringing the entire thing out? Or like you're trying to roll a arm cuff motion?

Re: How to make a skein?

If you are going to dye more you might want to make this, it's really worth the time it takes and it's SUPER cheap to make and a lot easier than using a chair.

I made mine 12" in the center because I didn't like it longer and I didn't care about the length just needed to be able to wrap it.

I also labeled each arm with a number 1, 2, 3, or 4 and used those to help me wrap it
