Toddler refuses to let me brush his teeth

How do I get my toddler (23 months) to let me brush his teeth before bed and upon waking in the morning? He likes to do it himself (usually), but at such a young age he is not very thorough. He pitches a FIT (yelling no, thrashing arms and legs, running away) lately when I try to do it. I let him brush a bit and then a attempt to "have a turn." We also sing a song about brushing teeth. Ive also tried brushing my teeth when he brushes his in order to set a good example. currently we use a toddler toothbrush with only water (no toothpaste). This isn't something I feel that I can be flexible on...

I have to pin my 25 month old toddler to the floor to brush his teeth. Generally he screams the whole time. I don't know what else to do because at 2 he just does not do a good job on his own.

Yep. It actually helps when he screams because then his mouth is wide open.

We always tell them that brushing their teeth is "not a choice" "you do not want pirate teeth" and then do it. No more chatting or cajoling. We take a turn and then they can take a turn if they chose. It sounds like yours has gotten turned in to a circus so your LO thinks that that is what is supposed to happen during that activity. There is a mama on here that posted a pic a good while back of a way to hold/restrain them. She sat on the floor w/ LO head in her lap and used her legs to help hold arm and legs out of the way. Perhaps someone will link to the thread.

We use tooth paste here, maybe try some and see if he likes the taste.

Mine sucks it off goes mmm and then proceeds to scream when you continue trying to brush his teeth. That is when he gets pinned to the floor or he will run.

Re: Toddler refuses to let me brush his teeth

My compliant child ocassionally resists brushing her teeth. We play the "What's in your mouth?" game. I exclaim, "Did I just see a zebra in your teeth? I did! I saw a rhino too! You must have missed brushing that tooth. Let me brush that zebra out of there." While I brush her teeth, I proceed to find all kinds of weird objects in her teeth like books, cars, bath toys, and of course, more animals. It works everytime.

We also used to sing the ABC song. While DD brushed, I sang the song once. Then, I brushed her teeth while I sang the song again. It gave DD a good idea when the brushing would be finished.

Sounds about right. The only thing my kids do not freak out about is tooth brushing. Baths are like chopping off limbs.

Mine used to do that until I started to sing a song now he lets me do it with no problems. I sing the "This is the way" song, my verses are brush the front, brush the top, brush the back, so early in the morning or right before bed. I can usually get 2 runs at each section.

LOL! Totally true!! We do the same thing.

They get a choice : the 'easy way' or the 'hard way'.
