Our Grandmothers used Lard Soap?

i bought lard a few years ago to season an iron skillet with. the smell made me sick it stank so bad. is this normal for lard or did i get a bad batch?
as for the lard/lye soap, where is a good place to get it? does it have a smell to it?
i'm interested in getting away from the commercial soaps but i'm not real happy with goats milk soap and some of the others i've tried.

And if it smells REALLY bad- I'm pretty sure lard can become rancid.

While that may have been the typical laundry soap used back in the day, they also boiled their diapers and sunned them. Likely the boiling counteracted the residue of that goes with using a true soap and high water temps are known to help whiten during the cleaning process. In Europe chlorine bleach is not commonly used these days and super high temp wash cycles in FL washers are used for white laundry instead. It wouldn't surprise me that lard was used to prevent diaper rash at all, I have used palm shortening for diaper rashes and it has a similar consistency.

I order lye soap from Sappo Hill Soap through Azure Standard by the case of 12 bars for $17. I could get maybe 3 bars of goat milk soap for that price, and it totally dried out my skin.

It is not lard soap, but rather palm and coconut oils, but it is creamy and ultra moisurizing. We used to use lard soap and it was wonderful, too, but can't find it anymore.

I'm going to go with bad... mine doesn't have a smell.
