Help! fitteds and wool newbie!

For starters - I'm 2 wks into cloth diapering with a 4mth, 17lb, chubby thighs, skinny waist, little guy!

and I bought a variety of dipes to try - prefolds, fitteds, pockets, PUL covers, wool covers, etc.


I FINALLY got brave enough to wash and lanolize my wool (twice!)

But....I'm not sure if my boy is a super soaker (needs changed every 45min)

or if my wool isn't lanolinized well enough

or .... if my wool or fitteds aren't .....fitting!!


I've tried:
wool day soaker (diaper sized - moisture wick at leg holes)
Disana wool shorties (damp to the touch - got on t-shirt)
fleece day soaker (moisture wick at leg holes)

over:
kissaluvs bamboo fitted
hemp prefold
thirsties fab fitted (new and used)
cricketts hemp fitted (sort of crunchy)

FWIW fitted/prefold/whatever under PUL does fine


Where to go from here??
I'd MUCH rather the natural materials and breathability of wool, but this little guy is only going to get bigger and wet MORE!

Any ideas would be SUPER!!

I think your problem will easily be solved. With a wool cover you usually need to add more absorbancy(doubler) than with a pul cover. Or change more often, but usually a doubler will do the trick. Also if a onsie is snapped over a wool cover and is pulled tight(like a onsie that is almost to small to fit over the cover) the wool will wick.

I agree with PP about sizing, make sure they aren't super tight or they will wick sooner.

How long did you lanolize for? If it's new wool, you might need to lanolize it for a very long time before it works well. And how much lanolin did you use? If you just used a wool wash, you probably need more lanolin. HTH!

Yup I think the issue is likely a tighter onsie(assuming this is what you had on) causing compression leaks.

As for being a heavy wetter. My son was a very heavy wetter the first 2-3 months. He would completely drippy wet soak a diaper every hour. Add to that pooping every feeding(which averaged hourly) we went through a ton of diapers. He has slowed down since then. Now at 20 months he is very definitely a light wetter. Sometimes he is completely dry after 2-3 hours in the same diaper.

ditto what everyone else said about the wicking to the onesie at the leg holes. with wool I try to change w/ every pee. I check the little guy often & sometimes change every 2-3hrs & sometimes he pees 20min after I change him. I don't let him sit in a diaper b/c it is just a little wet. For us wet is wet & with wool you can't let a diaper get sopping wet like you can w/ a pul cover. it will leak

so try adding a doubler, checking a bit more often, changing if even damp & not putting a tight onsie or pants over. It takes a bit of getting used to but once you get into a good routine it'll become 2nd nature. I had to switch my guy to wool 100% of the time at 6m & we rarely get leaks (usually if DH is watching him & forgets to check if he's wet or if I don't change his night diaper quick enough & he unloads his 1st morning pee into an already full diaper).

I change every time he's wet, no matter how little, but always by 45min - an hour at most.

The one time the t-shirt got wet, it was, indeed, a onesie that was a bit too tight over the extra fluff!
The wool was damp to the touch, as well - is this ok or will it wick into the bed/seat/etc.??

The leg holes were with no clothes touching - though, now that you bring it up, do you snug the leg "sleeves" up to the crease where the leg meets the trunk or do you leave it loose?

As for lanolin -I followed the video on GMD.
I used a bit of liquid lanolin and a touch of detergent and soaked them for 20min the first time.
Dried for 24hrs
same thing, but forgot and they got 35 min!

2 are upcycled day soakers
1 Disana shortie (new)
1 kissa day cover (new)

Tomorrow's project - doubling up!
