Cutting a prefold without a serger, bad idea?

I was contemplating making inserts out of cotton prefolds then pairing hem with hemp. Is cutting a prefold without a serger, bad idea? Would zig zaging the poo out of it hold it? Or would it stay together long enough to put some edging on it?
thoughts would be great

I've done it with a tight zig zag stitch. It works okay. Not too much unraveling.

I had done this before I had a serger and mine shed a lot while I was zigzag stitching the edges. They looked fine though, you just have to clean your sewing machine after!

What I found works best if you don't have a serger is to cut another piece of material to use for turning & top sewing to the prefold. I made a couple of prefitteds that way, and they look pretty and hold up to wash wear. I've also seen some ladies trim the inside layers away and fold the two outer layers to the inside and top sew. Another way you could do it is using bias tape or fold over binding around the edges.

I have done this and made pre-fitteds and zig-zag'ed the edges and it worked fine.

I did it. I zig zagged and then went over it a straight stitch. (I was converting prefolds to fitteds) I trimmed it after I washed. It didn't look professional but it was functional.

I wonder if you couldn't just put some bias tape on the raw edge . , .
