Best needle gauge for a newbie to start with?

I am not sure what you mean by needle gauge?? Do you mean needle size?

If so, I would say US 5, 16" long and US 7, 16" and 12"( or you can get longer ones for Magic Loop or a set of 2 circular or double pointed needles for the legs.)

A gauge is the number of stitched per inch (spi) that you knit with a given needle size and a given yarn. For example, using worsted yarn and US 7 needles a usual gauge is 4.5 -5 spi.

go with what your pattern says and its called needle gauge, don't worry
and the gauge you want will change depending on how loose (or tight in my case, lol) you knit. that's why people swatch- so they can see if they match the pattern with the way they knit and the yarn they chose. (I'm bad, I just wing it)
