Is it possible for a baby to re-learn to BF after being bottle fed?

My baby was a little preemie and after an extended stay in the NICU, never really learned how to breast feed. He could do it but never to get enough milk and we were so concerned about him gaining weight that we ended up just bottle feeding him pumped milk. He's 6 months old now and gaining weight very well, and I was just starting to wonder if it was possible for him to re-learn how to BF. I gave it a try the other day but he looked at my boob in horror and pulled away (so sad!) Has anyone ever been able to teach their baby to BF after he's been bottle fed for a long time?

I believe it's possible. You might talk to your local La Leche League leader(s) or and/or an IBCLC to get help and tips on how best to go about it. It'll probably take some work, and a lot of patience, but if you're motivated, I think you likely can. Sorry you had so many troubles in the beginning. Glad your LO is doing well now!

agree with the pp.. maybe try a nipple shield so it feels more like a bottle..

It might be tough but just keep trying. I would offer the boob before every feeding and if you can express a little milk it would be even better. He might just give it a try and realize that "oh I can get milk here too!"

One thing that might be a problem is if he's used to fast flow bottles he might get frustrated. My DD is primarily bottle fed but I can get her to bf in the mornings and when she's going down for naps. I use preemie nipples and she still gets frustrated at my boobs.
