Part of it is the child's attitude too. Abby would flail about at any sign of mistake. The little chant was helpful because she wanted to preempt writing wrong. Emmett doesn't care if he has to fix it, so I don't worry about. He'll outgrow it in a few years anyway.

Great tips! I'd forgotten about b e d. My 5 yo still mixes them up. Although really that's quite normal so I don't worry about it too much. Many times he catches himself now too.

"line and a circle is the letter b...circle and a line is the letter d"

"Bat and ball" make the letter "b." (First you draw the "bat"--the straight line and then the "ball" --the round part.)

"Drum and drumstick" make the letter "d." (First you draw the "drum" --the round part, and then you add the "drumstick"--the straight line.)
