Also an experienced rider, owned Thoroughbreds for almost 15 yrs and spent over 20 riding them. One of the worst falls was just walking one out after a workout. Think trail ride relaxed on a loose rein, etc. He tripped suddenly and couldn't catch himself, went down to his knees and I flipped over his head.

It doesn't matter how calm and trained the horse is or how slow the pace. It takes a split second to go from a walk to a gallop and they can buck even at a walk. All sorts of freak things can go wrong.

So no, absolutely not. It's not worth the risk (to me).

If my SO ould let me yes. But it would really depend on how I felt and the horse. I was trail riding one time on a very mellow bombprood horse...so mellow in fact that he fell over...like just got tired I guess and toppled over.

I wouldn't. I did ride in my first pregnancy up to the fourth month when my baby bump started to push out far enough that I was worried about injuring the baby, and my balance was starting to change. And that was on my crazy fruit loop mare who invents things to spook at. But up to that point I had been riding daily, was in very good shape, and felt confident I could stay in the saddle in most situations. I stopped jumping, though, when I found out I was pregnant.

My second pregnancy I didn't ride at all. Since I was no longer riding regularly (funny how having a baby changes your life lol), I didn't feel that I was good enough to stay in the saddle through a freak out. I was also more aware of what, or I should say who, I was risking.

So now, no I wouldn't do it. Especially now after seeing what can happen even to the best riders in the world when a freak accident happens (such as Courtney King-Dye).

Just an update, I decided to tag along in the carriage with DD instead, and it was quite a long trip - I am glad I didn't try to ride. DH's horse was a bit frisky and I was uncomfortable enough jouncing in the carriage for that long.

It also POURED rain for 2 hours of the 2.5 hour ride - we were all soaked to the skin with puddles in our boots. DD escaped mostly dry since I bundled her up in a huge wool blanket.

I can't think of something that would be much more torturous - OUCH. No way. (I have some weird hip issues, and something going on with my pelvis as well, probably SPD)

Aside from that, though, I don't know that I'd do it still. Likely a good compromise was to go in the carriage - that sounds like it would have been fun!

Re: Would you do a trail ride in the third trimester?

I rode through my first two pregnancies until it was too uncomfortable. I am not sure I would go on a trail ride, just because I have always found my horses to be less predictable on the trail than in the arena. There is a risk to everything, so I guess you have to decide which ones are worth taking. Sounds like you made a good choice for your physical comfort level.
