I'm about to lose it!

Ds is 5 months and up until about 2 weeks ago he was only waking up once a night (twice on a bad night). Now he's waking up 4/5 times again AND waking up an hour earlier in the morning even though his bedtime hasn't changed. Half of the time I get up with him he actually nurses and the other half he just falls back asleep as soon as I put a boob in his mouth (but won't fall asleep other wise).

He was a little over 3 months when he started sleeping better and I was about to lose it then too. I just can't keep getting only 2 hours of sleep at a time (if I'm lucky) and I don't know what to do. I'm horribly tired and crabby all the time, my body aches from not sleeping and my head pounds almost all day. I am so tired that words cannot express right now and it's affecting every aspect of my life. What is going on?!?

It doesn't help that no matter how hard I try ds is NOT a napper. He won't nap at all during the day unless I let him nap in my arms so I have almost no time to myself! I'm about to lose my mind, I don't know what to do! Advise please?

Re: I'm about to lose it!

My daughter went from sleeping great to doing that at around 4 months. They say a possible reason is because they are learning so much and get distracted more easily during the day so they don't eat as much. Then they make up for it at night. I started doing cluster feeding (feeding her at least every hour, if not more) about three hours before bed time. It seemed to help a little. If he's teething and hurting, you might consider a little tylenol at bedtime, or get an amber necklace.

Mine wouldn't nap without me holding her for the first few months. I started babywearing around the house so I could still move around and get stuff done. She was perfectly content to nap in the carrier. She is 5 months and we nap together and cuddle. Maybe that is a way for you to make up for a little sleep while he naps. Good luck!

Re: I'm about to lose it!

My 5 month old just went through three weeks of that. No other symptoms. I finally brought her to the doctor because I thought something might be wrong... and he had an ear infection! No redness that I could see, no rubbing of his ears. He's been on antibiotics for a week and for the past three nights he's slept 10 hours straight. And been a VERY happy baby during the day again I know people have differing opinions on antibiotics; but clearly, he was uncomfortable and I'm glad they helped my little peanut rest. And myself. LOL!

BTDT. It will happen again. Both my girls were off and on with sleep until age 2. Sorry mama! This too shall pass.

Mine were also inconsistent with sleep until age 2. Now at 5 and 3 they finally sleep great.

What helped me was adjusting my mindset from one of "gaaaaaaa...I'm not getting any sleep! When will this child sleep?" to one of a more go with the flow attitude. "I will probably be up all night tonight but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised." LOL

I was kind of lucky in that neither of mine were ever really good sleepers so I didn't get used to sleeping only to have them start getting up at night - we just didn't sleep for 2 years

Teething?? I found an amber necklace made a huge difference in sleep. I used to take it off at night because it made me nervous. But realized after the fact that it can be wound around baby's ankle under pj's. Have you tried a good baby carrier? Your LO is big enough to go on your back too. It makes life so much more manageable because you can do what you NEED to do and meet your LO's needs at the same time. If you are hesitant to spend the $$ then try a babywearing group near you. Most have a lending library.

Re: I'm about to lose it!

I could have written your post exactly. My DD is 5 months and wakes up 2 or 3 times. Occasionally there is one night where she will go from 9pm to 4:30am. She doesn't nap either. Cat naps here and there. Occasionally she will take an hour nap but there is no consistancy.

I have no advise since I don't know what to do with my own. My other kids were great sleepers. To make it worse I WOH and have to leave the house by 6am. I am exhausted all the time.

Re: I'm about to lose it!

Sorry to hear that. I am thinking that it might be teething too. That's what happened with my daughter at about 5 months. Check his temperature, it might not be fever, but he might feel warmer to the touch. I used to put cold rags on her forehead.

As far as the sleeping, he might be "ingreido" (in Spanish). This means basically, that the baby has been hold too long too often and the baby gets used to be hold all the time. You might have to start winding him down, even if that means that the baby will be crying for a bit.

Hopefully the baby will start to put himself to sleep.

Agreed. My DD was a horrible sleeper until around 18 months. Then something clicked and she's been a great sleeper ever since. I actually miss her napping on me now......
