au-pairs are usually 18-20 and they drive kids, I've never heard of them being high risk for accidents. I would meet the person, there are plenty of ADULTS I wouldn't have my kid drive with :-)

Another sad truth, the driver isn't always the one at fault in an accident. She could be the most perfect driver ever and disaster strike, that is the risk with car travel

I probably wouldn't let my dd ride with them, but I would try to make it possible for her to still attend the event. Obviously too late now, but I do feel bad for your dd that she wasn't able to go.

Re: Am I being unreasonable? My 11 daughter thinks I am!

Thanks for all the input so far.
I think I may do the case by case basis. There is a good chance this situation will come up again with the same family. I will talk to her parents to get some more info on the daughter. She seems like a nice girl and her parents are very open people so I will get a straightforward answer about her driving skills and responsibility in general.
I think a PP mentioned what is probably my biggest issue. I just have no control. Good driver, bad driver, something bad could happen Being a parent is so scary.

And lol, life is definitely unfair to the 11 year olds of the world.

ETA: I do feel bad that she didn't get to go. I couldn't take her myself because my DH had the car.

I'm trying to get over a fear of flying, they say there is more risk dying on the way to the airport. Sadly car accidents are way too common.

An adult may have more skill to avoid a crash, but they could text/drive, drink/drive., not have had enough sleep etc.

What kind of car is it, the weather, time of day.

Sadly there is just no fool proof system, and that really sucks!

and then you have adults who are overconfident in their skills and take too many risks.

I will never ever ever ride with my father in a city environment again. He hasn't had a wreck.. but nope. nada. won't be happening.
