the thrifty girl in me won't do it!

I use Virgin Mobile for my phone service. I signed up when it was $25 per month. It has since been bumped up to $35 per month, but I'm grandfathered in and still pay $25.

DH got me a new phone. I love it - it's got a bigger memory, it is a mobile wifi hotspot, so I can use my iPad on the go. It has a better camera. It's all around a better phone.

Activating it means paying more for my plan, an extra $10 per month.

My current phone is constantly running out of space. I can't have more than a few apps on it. The camera is just "eh". Other than that there isn't anything wrong with it.

The thrifty girl in me says return the phone and keep the $25 per month plan with the inferior phone.

The non-cheap portion of my brain says to just pay the extra. It's still only $35 per month for unlimited data, texts and 300 minutes of talk time.

What would you do?

Can you not take the sim card out of the cheap phone and put it in the new one?

I don't think so. I'm going from an LG Optimus to an HTC EVO.

ETA: Google says no. The CDMA network does not use SIM cards.

Re: the thrifty girl in me won't do it!

I think that would irritate me to know that the price increased that much to upgrade... so I would probably stick with what I had.

I was phone shopping recently and ended up with a tmobile monthly plan. It's $30 and includes unlimited text and data (first 5gb is super fast 4g, after that it's slower 2g), and 100 minutes a month. If your phone is unlocked, I'd take the new upgraded phone and go with tmobile and enjoy faster speeds if you can manage with fewer minutes (or just use skype).

The 100 minutes wouldn't work. I use about 250 a month

It would depend. If I was in debt or didn't have savings, I would not spend more just to have a nicer phone. But, if it was just $10 less into savings, I probably would.

For me it would be worth it. if it make life easier than I would find something to cut out elsewhere. We use our phones for everything. they are my ipod, address book, main form of communication, navigation, reader, etc. totally worth an extra $10 to cut out other electronics

I have virgin mobile and don't want to upgrade phones for this exact reason however I have a mobile hotspot and if I didn't have it I would upgrade in a heartbeat for $10 more a month its totally worth it to me. Much cheaper than a data plan for ipad it even a mifii device from virgin mobile.
