still lactating

I breast fed my daughter until she was 17 months old. She is now 21 months and I feel milk let down every once in a while and sometimes it comes out in my sleep. Any idea when my body will stop making milk?

Re: still lactating

I remember my mom was able to express a little milk when I was 4 or 5. I weaned at 18 months and she didn't have another child until I was 6.

Re: still lactating

Some women continue to make milk for many years after stopping breastfeeding. This was a topic on another breastfeeding forum, and if I remember correctly there was a woman's mom (or other female relative) that still had milk until menopause!

One of the leaders at La Leche said to use sage. A few sprinkle here and there will dry you up! Never tried since I'm still bfing but thought I'd pass along the tip.

You have high prolactin and might want to see your doctor if it continues. While it is not a huge deal, it can cause you to stop ovulating. It is a common cause for infertility in women. Just figured I would pass that along as there is medication to reduce prolactin levels and restore normal hormone levels.
