Re: what's your favorite first grade curriculum?

We use the full A Beka curriculum. Our state is THE most strict in the country as far as guidelines and requirements for homeschoolers, and A Beka meets all of them flawlessly so I have no stress about requirements or worrying about not excelling at standardized tests. I taught before I had kids so I have a lot of experience making a set curriculum work for kids with different learning styles, so that definitely works in our favor. I really can make it work for any of the kids thus far.

Re: what's your favorite first grade curriculum?

We are going to be using My Father's World 1st this fall. We use K right now and LOVE it. We are adding All About Spelling 1 and using Horizon for Math because DS really likes math, and I wanted to add a spelling component.

Not starting first until July but we are using ambleside online, miquon math, a weekly coop that will include a science art and geography lesson, journaling and letter writing, cover an artist and a composer either weekly or biweekly, undetermined beginning Spanish program (cd and or dvd), and undetermined phonics program.

Well see how this goes, and possibly add in mep and or Singapore if we need more for math.

Five in a Row for K-2 for a curriculum that is picture book unit study based.
Or, I really like the Sonlight reading lists, but not the teachers manuals & plans.

But we are mostly unschoolers. And we live in NY, where things are strict for homeschooling regs, but that does not mean we need to follow any set curriculum, as long as we document our activities.

Thank you mama! We used Heart of Dakota this year for K. I am looking for something different for 1st.. I NEVER thought I would want to pull my own curriculum together, but I am feeling this may be the best choice for us in the coming year.

Math: Right Start B (we are in 1 right now & loving it!)
Grammar: Language Lessons
Reading: we will finish the Reading Lesson & work through the Progressive Phonics books online. I'll also get as many of the Sonlight books as I can from the library & we'll read them together for fun.
History : Story of the World volume 1
Science : Magic School Bus monthly science club (we got a good price on it through the Homeschool Co=op)
Handwriting : Daily Handwriting from Evan-Moore & a handwriting joke book from Amazon for fun!
Geography: Galloping the Globe
Arts: we get together with our HS friends every week & do baking & art projects, plus we'll do random various holiday crafts

Re: what's your favorite first grade curriculum?

We used MFW for K and liked it, but I needed to pare down subjects because of how busy we are on the farm. So for 1st grade, I chose:

-Explode the Code
-A Reason for Handwriting
-Lifepac History and Geography
-Singapore Math

I figure the farm can be life science... the boys help Papa plant and all that. Then they help me with livestock and milking and all that.
Then Bible will just be devotionals everyday and the Jesus Storybook Bible. They do one craft in Sunday School.
Then we usually do one craft (For art) a week pertaining to the season/holiday.
