How do I find a Birth Photographer?

I'm just a tad bit overwhelmed trying to find someone to document my birth for me. How did you find one if you had one??? It would be so easy for me if I wasn't new to the area but I am and now I'm stumped. I was also curious, what is a reasonable fee for birth photography? I guess it may vary area to area but I'm curious what kind of prices I should be looking for? I goggled birth photography in my area and wasn't really impressed with anything I saw so far.

I'd guess 200-400 for a fee, depending. Do you have a midwife or doula? You can probably ask them for recommendations. You can put an ad on Craigslist asking for a birth photographer and requesting portfolios/websites.

A midwife. AH! Perfect! I have no idea why I didn't just think of that. Thank you.

Where are you located? I can ask ours for recommendation. The fee ranges from 400 to 1200 with rights to all the images. Session fee is around 400, I think. We've had ours done for both our babies and no regrets! Cherished every moment. Congrats mama!

Around here they're $600/650 to $1200+. Some include photos but most you pay another $600+ for a CD of images w/rights. I got in on an awesome deal when I booked mine... Then labor was super fast and she wasn't able to get there until after I was situated post-placenta delivery

$375 here including prints and a cd w rights. She works with my midwife, so it was easy to find her and the midwife will call her when it's time

Re: How do I find a Birth Photographer?

Thank you for all the advice ladies. Turns out there is no way we can afford one atm unless finances change in the next month or so. It breaks my heart a bit but it just isn't in the budget right now. At least I looked into it and found out instead of just wishing and thinking it was something I should have done. That would have driven me nuts.

Re: How do I find a Birth Photographer?

I know I already said it, but post an ad on craigslist. There are often portfolio building photographers scouting, and birth photography is a difficult genre to get into.
ETA I say that as a photographer who moved to a new location, wants to do birth photography and knows no one pregnant
