My son just started sitting up on his own so we're excited to be breaking free from lugging his carseat around. He sat in his first high chair last week and I realized why mamas use those shopping cart/high chair covers! He wanted to chew on everything surrounding him! I looked at the prices on these things and they can be outrageous. Does anyone have any good links to tutorials on making my own cover? I'm fairly handy with a sewing machine but very new to the world of baby products. Thanks!

You'll be surprised how expensive they can be to make, depending on what fabric you use and if you use batting inside, etc. I ended up making mine out of flannel, and then a second out of a quilt I bought that didn't fit my bed right.

Thanks. I like that I can choose my own fabric to make one. They seem fairly easy...like a giant shower cap with holes for the legs

Are you going to use batting to make it nice and soft or just flat?

I wish I had taken the time to make ours, but out of desperation I picked up a floppy seat at the local consignment store for $8 .... But it was a fairly ugly print! We only used it for a few months though ;-)

Here's the one I made, it is cotton woven on the outside backed with fleece. I didn't use a pattern.
Here is what I did:

I layed my fleece flat on the floor.

I layed my woven on top with right side up.

Evened out the edges so both were same size, I think I used about 3/4 yard, maybe a full yard.

Serged together.

Find the exact middle of the fabric, figure where you want your leg holes (I put mine about 24" from the front, if that makes sense.) And center your leg holes with about 3" in between them.

I would suggest using cd's to make your leg holes. I used a six inch quilting square and it was way too big.

Leave room for your baby's butt and make slits in the other end of the fabric for the seat belt. I didn't measure, just make long slits and they will work even if they are not in the exact right place.

I serged the edges of the seat belt slits and the leg holes. I also sewed around them, about 3/4" from the edges to reinforce them.

Then I used FOE to bind the edges, pulling tight the whole time.

Hope that helps! It's not perfect, but it works great!
