Medicaid waiver for therapy?

Has anyone done this? What's the process like?

My DS's SLP mentioned we should try to get one to cover his speech therapy. Right now we are paying out of pocket because insurance refuses to cover it.

For dd's ST and OT out Dr had to write a prescription for it so she could get services. It's kind of a pain but it worth it. And Medicaid should be covering most if not all of your services. She has supplemental so I'm not sure how that differs from what you have.

Re: Medicaid waiver for therapy?

I do have a prescription from the doctor, but our insurance will not pay for it. We aren't currently on Medicaid, we have United HealthCare. They are paying for OT. Basically, we would need the Medicaid to supplement our existing insurance.

What state are you in?

Does he have a diagnosis other than speech?

If its just speech and you don't qualify income wise you likely won't get Medicaid. If he has autism there is a Katie Beckett Medicaid waiver that allows therapy and Medicaid for children with autism to be covered (in some states). (That said its usually only 12 speech, 12 OT and 12 pt per calendar year).

Re: Medicaid waiver for therapy?

We are in Iowa. His SLP said we would likely qualify because EI has labeled him as "developmentally delayed". Autism was a possibility, but it's seeming less and less likely the older he gets.

It wouldnt hurt to call and ask. But likely it wont get covered unless you meet income guidlines.

The label EI gives is not a medical diagnosis. Just and educational diagnosis and medicaid will not accept it unless it comes from a doctor.

But call. You may qualify and it certainly wont hurt.

Re: Medicaid waiver for therapy?

Thanks. That is kind of what I figured. We do qualify for reduced cost health insurance in Iowa, but the income guidelines here are very high. We aren't anywhere near qualifying for medicaid. It would just be so nice to not shell out $1,000 a month in therapy!
