How do you "order" chicks?

This may be a dumb question, but I've seen people say on here that they've "ordered" chicks and I'm wondering how that is done? I have my heart set on Buff Orpingtons and I can't find any pullet chicks at any of our feed stores that haven't sold out, on Craigslist, etc for my area. They have other breeds I don't particularly want, and since I'm urban and can only have 5 laying hens, I want to make sure I get 5 of what I really want for the next couple years!

You can order from hatcheries like Meyer. They only have certain breeds avaliable. They have an order min for chicks of only 3. I will warn you shipping will be crazy! Probably $35 or more. They do include a heating pad if needed. We ordered ours online. There are other online hatcheries. http://www.meyerhatchery.com/product...d%20%27BUOS%27

Re: How do you "order" chicks?

You can also just order the regular min (most places it's 10-15) and sell off the rest. Very easy to do if they are all female. That way you could make your $$ back and not be out that much for shipping.

Here's a list of hatcheries near you, there may actually be one close enough to pick up or ship at a lower cost since they don't have to go as far:

Re: How do you "order" chicks?

THANK YOU! I'm based near 3 of these, and one is only 20 miles away so I'm going to try them. I don't know why I didn't think to google hatcheries. Duh.

Also try Murray McMurray Hatchery online...,they have just about everything. They do have minimum order #s though, so they might not be the way to go if you're wanting a small number...
