So why else wouldn't my son be gaining weight

This probably doesn't go in BF support since I have given up on BFing, but I wasn't sure where else to put it.

On 2/12, I took my 4 month old (4 months that day) son to his well baby visit. That's when I learned he had lost 3lbs between his 2 month appointment and his 4 month appointment.

We were admitted to Riley Children's Hospital. While there they ran tests to check for all sorts of metabolic disorders, infections, and so on. Basically, they retested the Indiana newborn screen, so sickle cell, CF, etc. They also tested electrolytes, liver functions, blood sugars, and a couple other things. They got our feeding history, average wet diapers, dirty diapers, how he was eating, was he being supplimented, how was I mixing the formula suppliments, etc. They basically determined that it was a BFing supply problem, since I was mostly BFing. And I knew I was having some supply issues, which is why I was supplimenting some, but I didn't think it was THAT bad, and wasn't supplimenting more than 4 to 8 ounces a day. In addition, he never showed signs of dehydration, and was still having wet and dirty dipes that were pretty regular. Though compared to diapers now, they were not as much.

They set him up on a very strict feeding schedule by the bottle that started out with just an ounce and a half every 3 hours, and slowly increased. He gained quickly and very well with that schedule so we were discharged at 5 days, with an appointment at the doc's office for a weight check at 1 week after the admit date.

At that appointment, on 2/20, his weight gain was great, right on track with what he had been gaining and on a great curve back up.

Today was his next weight check and he's only gained 2 oz. I have been following his feeding schedule, he's up to 4 oz, every 3 hours. I admit that overnight, there were a couple of times that I overslept the alarm, but he would make up for that by taking up to 6 oz.

Throughout the whole time, I tried to nurse in between bottle feedings as well, but I have given up because I just don't have the time to fight him to latch, keep him latched, keep pumping after feeding him etc etc. So everything's been straight formula, and up until now, just standard mixing of powder and water.

Today when he was only up 2oz, the doc sent us to get another thyroid test, because they didn't do the full detailed test at Riley. And that's really the only other thing that the doc could come up with. That came back normal. We go back for a weight check on Monday, and if he's not up another 5ish ounces, we might end up being admitted again.

I am not sure what else we could be looking for. I did ask about parasites and they haven't tested for that, but the doc did say that if he had a parasite, the rest of the family would show signs, and he would be pooping a lot more. Of course, come Monday if he's not up some more, that will be the next set of tests, I will make sure of that.

But, does anyone have any other ideas? Except for the weight gain issue, he's otherwise happy and healthy. He's smiley, babbling, meeting developmental milestones and otherwise has no red flags of anything.

Anyone else experience this?

Food allergies can present that way, but there would be more signs. I hope they figure this out soon! <hugs>
