I would pull now too Kari. He will only fall further behind and he is at a crucial time for reading development.

#$#^#$%&%$^*&%^%^&%$^&%$^&%&^agh. The leak in the roof now requires a bucket. Sigh. The first bid on a new roof came in at 10k. Holy fork. Of course they are the most high end and expensive, but still. Eep.

Re: Basically it's Thursday

Hi all! Home from my training and TIRED! On the up side, supper is spaghetti and meatballs and all I need to do is reheat the sauce and boil pasta. I think I can handle that!

Training was interesting, but I did not get as many tips as I had hoped I might. Ah well. At least it was a good networking experience.

Lots of kids walk to school, or their parents drop them off. I had 12 kids out of 20 yesterday, with no busses running. One of the biggest classes in the school, of course!

THey use a center based approach and also have 3 reading specialists on staff. They evaluate the kids 3x per year, and each group reads books on their own lever. so the whole class might not be reading the same book Every day they start the day with a school wide assembly in the gym.. He said they try to push positive reinforcement. They hallways are covered with kids names that got "caught" being kind THey also have a start student from each grade every month and have a special bar paw on the wall with their name. In the gym they had music playing and kids being kids. and on the recess topic obviously if a child misbehaves they lose recess, however in his time there a whole class has never lost recess. HE says they stress personal responsibility
That is exactly how we do reading here. Balanced literacy. I have 5 groups of students in my class, ranging from reading level 2 (which is beginning of Grade 1, really) and level 20 (end of Grade 3). Everyone is working on their own thing.

At the old school, losing ten minutes of recess was a first offense consequence, losing all of it second offense consequence for individuals only. At the new school you pretty much have to lose your sheist to get recess taken away (and yes, the Divine Miss G has accomplished that once. Lesson learned. )
We are very strongly cautioned against taking recess away from the whole class for the infractions of a few. I have had them wait 1-2 minutes before for wasting my time/making me wait, but never a whole recess.

Add me to the list of people recommending to pull him now.

No recess ALL YEAR?! I would get my butt handed to me if I even *thought* about doing something like that.

And what teacher would want to spend the afternoon with a group of kids that haven't had recess...shudder....

At the dentist with Jerry. I offered to come with so he doesn't have to drive home. He has a real phobia of having dental work. Poor Guy.

I HATE indoor recess days, and even with those they are up and moving around.
