Re: Reasons Why We Homeschool

My #1 priority in life is not to raise children with superior intellects (which just leads to pride & boasting) but it is to raise good people who love God.[/QUOTE]
Love this!

Re: Reasons Why We Homeschool

I homeschool my daughter for several reasons.

1. We were disappointed in the school system after her year in kindergarten. While she loved the environment, that was more because of her personality, and she was not challenged, nor was there any indication (and I asked) that there was any programs in place to challenge in the coming year.

2. I was also horrified at the amount of junk food that she came home with. She always saved her treats so she could share them with her brothers, and she was bringing home stuff about once a week. I feel that it is absurd for them to throw a party for every holiday, and reward them for academic work with sugar that frequently. Also, her frequent stomachaches decreased at the end of the school year, which may or may not be associated with the candy she got at school.
3. I love the freedom to plan family vacations and trips without respect to school breaks, so we can go in the off season. Also made it easy to send the kids to Grandma's when I had my baby.
4. I didn't see too much peer influence on my daughter in kindergarten (i.e. swearing, potty humor, etc.) but I knew what I heard in elementary school, and what I have heard my nephews saying, and I sure don't want my kids around those influences.
5. Finally, I felt impressed by the Spirit to bring my daughter home, for this year at least. It is so wonderful to be able to teach according to my values.

I also have to say that I was worried that my kids would drive me nuts if I never got a break, but I having them around all the time (most of the time.)

And I never worried about socialization. Anyone who has met my daughter knows that she was born 'socialized.'

Edit: I forgot to add that I wanted my kids to continue to be close to each other and not do the sibling rivalry too much. Some days they are, some days they're not.

Here's my list so far:

Why We Homeschool
1. So our children have a genuine and close relationship with one another
2. So we can incorporate OUR faith and values on our children
3. To protect our children from unnecessary cruelty and hatred
4. So our children will enjoy education and learning

Re: Reasons Why We Homeschool

1. I don't agree with the way kids are pushed so hard, so fast in public or private schools. Heck, even the more involved homeschool co-ops. I like doing our own thing.

2. I want to foster better family relationships- between the kids and between the kids and me and DH. DH works in the ER, twelve hour shifts. He often works Saturdays, and evenings. If the kids were in school, they could easily have 2-3 days at a time per week that they wouldn't see daddy. The way it is now, DH has a few weekdays off per week, and we can do park days together, museums, just hang out together as a family. We get to enjoy each other more!

3. We want to be our kids' main influence. I want to be free to teach our kids Scripture at any time. There are so many more teachable moments when you are with your kids all day, and we want to be able to take advantage of them.

Re: Reasons Why We Homeschool

1- Because 3-1, 5-1, even 10-1 students to teacher is better than my kids will get in public school.
2- Because I don't believe in teaching to the "middle". My children are individuals and need to learn on their level.
3- Because getting up early in the morning might kill me.
4- Because I don't want my kids to stop enjoying learning.
5- Because I don't believe in our public school system right now. I don't believe in No Child Left Behind and I don't see it getting better.

Re: Reasons Why We Homeschool

I have to also add that my SIL is a music teacher at a public school. She is pretty supportive of our homeschooling, and has told us that now the schools in our area are testing three times a year. So the ONLY thing the teachers teach is for the test. They no longer have any time to do any of the fun, truly educational things that get kids excited about learning.

Don't forget teaching them HOW to take such tests, too.

I have only a 2 1/2 year old, but we do abcjlm. I teach in a private school and am surrounded by anti homeschool people, so I'm not sure how it will progress in this house quite yet.

Re: Reasons Why We Homeschool

So that my children and I can fail, and succeed together. I want them to see me fail. Life is not about how we deal with success, it's how we recover from falling on our faces, and overcoming it...growing.

So that I can raise them Catholic, while dh and I grow in our own Catholic belief.

So I can see the lightbulb flick on when they figure it out.

I could go on for hours...lol...
