Growing seeds

Looking for fun things to do with the LO.

What kind of plants do you grow from seed (in a cup, with wet papertowel or dirt) as a fun activity with your kids? At what age range do they seem to find it interesting to watch the plants grow? And after sprouting/growing some, do you transplant the papertowel ones to dirt or just throw them out?

Re: Growing seeds

well, at 18months, DD didn't care. but I ended up just transplanting them to the yard.

I think we'll try again this year.. she'll be 2.5ish.

You could try dried beans. We germinated 25 or so in a paper towel to see if the seeds were still good. We did transplant them after they sprouted. I doubt DS really knew what was going on, but he seemed to enjoy it. He was 2.5 when we germinated the seeds, but I had him in the garden on my back or playing next to us since he was a year old.

Re: Growing seeds

Peas or beans work well, flowers like marigolds. We have sprouted apple seeds, but they took a fair while to come up. If you plant them, esp marigolds and smallish flowers, in a small pot to begin with, rather than a paper towel, you can probably just keep them in there without the need to replant.
