Converting a garden shed to a chicken coop

Any tips? Links? Advice?

We are hoping to have between 4 and 6 hens and I really don't know much

Re: Converting a garden shed to a chicken coop

My neighbors turned their garden shed into a "chicken coop" if you want to call it that. They literally just took everything out. Put in some nesting boxes and purches. Made a little make shift run for them to get out. They keep the door open during the day (tied back) and then just shut everyone in at night. It's nothing fancy but it gets the job done.

We did... added a wooden perch & some wooden nesting boxes (all made by DH)... hung the feeder & waterer from the cross beam in the ceiling via a nylon rope. Ours is plastic too, so we can hose it down & clean it out pretty easily. I question the integrity of the door hinges long term (w/it all being plastic/resin??), but figure we'll cross that bridge if we have an issue.

Re: Converting a garden shed to a chicken coop

pretty simple, that's what I want to do when we move. Get a nice big 12x8 and turn it into a coop. Only advice is lots and lots and lots of ventilation.

YES! Ours has a vented roof, a small window, & DH cut a hole in the wall by the bottom of it so the girls can let themselves out into their run while they are waiting for us to let them into the yard.

Great thanks so much!

It is a little wooden garden shed and I thought it was perfect because it already has shelves, windows and a hole on the side by the floor (thinking this is how they can get out into the run)

I showed my BIL tonight and he thinks he can help do it pretty easily too.

Yes!! I plan to take lots of pics.

The chicks are hatching Sunday so I will go pick them up next week and hope to convert the shed next weekend. I am really excited!

Re: Converting a garden shed to a chicken coop

We're doing the same thing. Like a PP said, ventilation!
We're converting an old 12'x8', but we're putting a partition wall with a door in it across the middle, so one end will be tool shed and the other will be coop. we are more than 1/2 finished but the project has taken a long time of a little work here and there. We're slow going
We use pallet wood to make a really sweet nesting box unit with 4 nests.
The finished coop will be 6'x8' and we plan to house up to 24 birds in there. We free range all day every day so I'm not too worried about over crowding them in the coop at night. Also, we're putting all the perches on 1 side and the flooring there is wire, so most poop will fall through.
Their current coop is all wire floor which I don't favor them walking all over (especially not chicks) but it is a breeze to clean, so we'll kind of be getting the best of both worlds.

Someone else mentioned BYC, backyardchickens.com is the place to go for chicken advice (and they have sections of the forum for other livestock too).
