Help me make a must-have list for a first time mom!

What would you say are the must have items for a first time mom?
diapers
food (hopefully breastmilk)
clothes
blankets
somewhere safe to sleep

...what else??

Looks like you've got it: baby needs to be clothed, diapered, and fed; needs a safe place to sleep and a safe place to be set down away from other children/pets/etc.; needs a safe car seat if s/he will ever ride in the car. Depending on circumstances a wrap or other carrier and/or a stroller.

Re: Help me make a must-have list for a first time mom!

In no particular order:
- Diaper pail and liners (or trash can)
- Bottles
- Washable or disposable nursing pads
- Highchair (need by 6 months)
- Infant tub
- Swaddling blankets
- Infant Car Seat
- Stroller
- Diaper Bag
- Wet/Dry Bags
- Baby Carrier
- Pacifiers ???
- Teething toys (need by 4-5 months)
- Bouncy seat – so she can take a shower!
- Infant swing
- Safety gates (need by crawling age)
- Cupboard and drawer latches
- Changing pad and cover
- Waterproof pads (she'll want lots of these because she can use them to cover EVERYTHING!!!)
- Sleepers (better than onesies because socks are impossible to keep on an infant)
- Breast pump and accessories (if the hospital opens ANYTHING pertaining to the pump, TAKE IT HOME! They throw it away after you leave and that tubing is uber-expensive!)

Note: Costco disposables wipes are the BEST on the market hands down

I think it's awesome that you're helping her out! Have fun!!!

Re: Help me make a must-have list for a first time mom!

I would add wipes and a baby carrier (moby, ergo, etc), as well as a diaper pail and wet bag if she's CD-ing

Honestly those are the must haves, and all I really used with my first (only thing I really added w/the second was a place to put baby down while I was helping toddler, we have a moses basket)

ANGELCARE MONITOR monitors baby's movement (rise & fall of chest) & alerts you if there is no movement for 20 seconds -does audio too

If you plan to co-sleep I would get the SNUZA baby monitor -similar concept as the ANGELCARE but it is small & clips on baby's diaper like a pager
(We have both of these monitors & love them! So much peace of mind!!

we love these two baby carriers best

moby & Ergo
Moby from birth to 35lbs
Ergo from 13lbs
congrats on your baby

Wipes and a carseat are the only other necessities. Anything else is a convenience item. I say I "need" a bouncer and swing, but my children would survive and not be developmentally damaged if I did not have them. They are just for my sanity (and laziness)

If we are talking nice to haves:
-carrier
-stroller
-diaper bag
-nursing cover
-bouncer
-swing
-rocking chair/glider
-muslin and velcro swaddled
-toys
-maybe pacifiers... I don't use them
-a pump (only a true necessity if mother will be returning to work, otherwise a SAHM, barring complications, does not truly need one)
-eventually a sippy cup and mesh teether

I don't find most baby list necessities to actually be necessities or even nice to haves. They are just cute dust collectors. We bed share and use a pack n play until baby moves into their own room (continue to bed hare part time until they sttn). We do changes on the floor. We don't use bottles or pacifiers. We multipurpose muslin blankets to be swaddles, nursing covers, play areas, changing table covers, burp cloths, etc. for short trips, I just toss a couple diapers in a wetbag, for long trips we end up using a backpack. We do BLW, so we don't need baby spoons and boos until they are feeding themselves.

Re: Help me make a must-have list for a first time mom!

Diapers
wipes
pacifiers
bottles
onesies
receiving blankets-to swaddle the babe during the first few weeks
a Boppy--definitely helpful when breastfeeding
a good breast pump for times when mom will be away from the baby
A bouncy seat..to place baby in so Mom can take a much-needed shower

I had a simple baby monitor..not a video one and not an Angelcare one either. IF my baby had a medical need for one like that, well that's different.

I had a swing but my son didn't like it at all. The bouncy seat was needed though

Re: Help me make a must-have list for a first time mom!

We had everything under the sun from well meaning relatives, but the only things we used were our cloth diapers/wipes, our mei tai carrier, the carseat, and a swaddleme....and clothes obviously. lol...but everything else never really got used. Sure she eventually played with toys as an infant, but tbh she liked stuff that wasn't toys better (like a random sock, or this huge pink ice cream scoop lol) I think most "necessities" aren't really necessities at all, just convenient, and some if it is downright useless. lol Newborns need so much less than FTMs are led to believe! Oh, with DD1, I did also use breast pads because I leaked - I hated the cotton ones because they stuck to my nipples, but bamboo ones didn't. And I had to use prefolds in each side of my bra at night (she STTN very early). When I had Eden, I didn't leak at all, except at night because I didn't wake up to pump.
