We had celebrations for both. I made cakes the kids could eat, and ordered from the good pizza place. I made iced tea. No theme. It's fun but no stress.

We had a huge party for DS1. We had family and a lot of close family friends. We did blue decorations with the number 1 on them. It was crazy. DH way overbought food for the BBQ. We rented a giant bounce house and slide. We had sprinklers and all kinds of outside toys. The kids spent almost all of their time in the bounce house. DS2 we did a smaller BBQ with family and a couple close friends. We went with a jungle animal theme. We got a bounce house for him too. If you have a lot of kids coming it is an easy way to keep them busy. We usually rent one at least twice a year.

We do huge first birthdays. DH is Korean and its a cultural thing, but I love throwing parties anyway. I think we had 40ish people here in our 1200 sqft house for DS2's party.

For summer you could do like a gardening/flower theme, bubbles, beach... so many options

Yep, lots of options.

We did a cook-out with a farm theme, basically since we had decided to give him a Little People farm set and rocking pony as gifts. We got birthday farm plates and napkins and 1 helium balloon from Oriental trading, then did red-and-white checked tablecloths and solid red and white napkins and other tableware and balloons.
