Re: SSI Disability
No unfortunately they do not consider the money your child costs for care. Now Medicaid will go back and pay for those things if you qualify but the catch in TX is that so far as I have found you have to qualify for SSI to qualify for medicaid. I'm almost certain that isn't true and there is some sort of loop hole, but I have yet to find it. Other states allow you to qualify for medicaid based on need alone.
We have issues like SSI will not allow me to have a car, even an old beater, but I need a car to get my child to therapy and doctor's appts. We are constantly on the line with dh's job because he has to take so much time off but SSI doesn't care about these kinds of things, they just care how things look on paper. If we have a second car we no longer qualify.

Re: SSI Disability
I have 2 disabled boys, one of them they approved about 8 months after the hospital applied (at his birth due to hydrocephalus), the other one they denied 10 months after applying and I've appealed 4 times and got a final denial through a federal judge. That was with an attorney (which is supposed to make it easier to get because they're more thorough). He has ADHD, Bipolar, Autism and ODD and at 15 still isnt completely toilet trained and can't handle basic daily functions without constant help. Im a single mother getting little to no child support and they're already taking money out of the one that does it get because I "make too much". I dont know what they base their payments on scale wise but I get about $130/mo in child support for 5 kids (father of 2 wont pay), I get about $300/mo in pay from my job and I recieve $613/mo for him in SSI. Not sure if that helps any.

I got diaper allowance for my dd from when she was about a year old until 3 and then they switched us to pull ups that they provide and those along with bed pads and diapering supplies I get monthly then every 6 months, she gets a mattress protector. We have something here called CVRC, and that's who was paying for the supplies, but I think ssi is who pays for it all.

Re: SSI Disability
I got the pediatrician to write him a script for pullups a couple months ago but his psych refuses to. I might just have to see if the ped will be willing to keep writing the script for it even though she's not the treating dr for his dx.

Re: SSI Disability
All 3 of our girls started getting it this summer and it been absolutely a God-send. We are under proverty levels though (even with dh working full time). They also count against you if you own more than 1 vehicle, if you have savings or assets over $2,000 (not including primary home). We aren't allowed to have over $2,000 in savings or it will cut off. Luckily tax returns don't count (they give you a set amount of time to spend it). Since ours started up in July we're still learning the ins and outs. We were told we had to open the child their own bank account (each girl has their own and they are ages 6,5,3) and they each have their own debit cards. I've been told at the end of the year we have to summarize what we bought but again haven't done that yet.
It took 3 months for ours to start after applying BUT we also got back pay for those 3 months and it was heavenly. I nearly had a heart attack the day our first checks came cause I never had been told the amount we qualified for so I had no idea. My friend gets $79/mth for her kids and I thought we would get that much- nope! We qualified for a LOT more. Every month that SS comes I praise God for that grace.

I receive SSI myself for just about 20 years now. I received survivors benefits as a child and right before I turned 18, my mom applied for it to turn over to SSI when I turned 18 and I'll be 38 in the summer. They are very strict with their financial rules. We have zero savings, just 1 car (dh had to find a night job so I could have the car during the day) and we live in a small 2 bedroom apt.
I was bumped off at one point 10 years ago when I was married to my ex and his income was just a little too high. When we split, I had to reapply. At that time, I had to submit all my medical info from all my doctors and they sent me to doctors of their choosing to do their own exams. I guess to make sure all the medical info was accurate. It took about 9 months but I was approved again & received a lump sum payment of what I would have received over that time period. SSI also has a new income reporting system where I have to call in once a month, every month to report household wages to an automated system. I hope it will help eliminate or cut down on the dreaded "overpayment". Ugh!! I have been considering applying for my son. He has a variety of medical & developmental problems but I've held off since he needs a few more evaluations that I hope would offer more information about what is going on with him.

My son was denied because we have more than $3000.00 in assets. Your most expensive vehicle is excluded which is our truck but my car is worth at least $12,000.00 and then we have his daddy's motor cycle and our old jeep. So basically they told me that if we needed money that we needed to sell off some of or stuff! I only applied because a secondary insurance would of been great! My son Parker has 11 doctors and $15.00 co pays and sometimes he can have 2-3 appointments a week!

Re: SSI Disability
You probably will be fine. You can't have more then $2,000 in assets (assuming the asset allowance hasn't gone up). The first car isn't counted if I remember correctly the second one is counted toward the assets. Some parents purposely lease or buy a car on loan so they can have 2 cars without going over the asset limit. It is just a matter of juggling your assets. I'm getting close to the point where I am going to have to cancel whole life insurance policy because the cash value is about to bump us over the asset limit. It sucks that you have to make crappy financial decisions to maintain Medicaid. These decisions are pretty much designed to keep you poor but it is what it is and it is just one of many sacrifices we make for these kids.
