Kindergarten Reading

I've been using Open Court reading for my son for Kindergarten. I started with it b/c I was able to borrow it from a friend. Through the year though I find that I am using less and less of it. We switched to something different for writing and recently switched out the phonics so that now I'm really not doing much of the program. I wanted to see what others are using for reading with their Kindergartener in case I decide to try something completely different. Curriculum and ideas of any sort are welcome. I'm currently considering just picking a theme of my own, maybe related to science or social studies topic and just reading books about the topic. What I"m not sure about is how to continue developing his ability to read for himself.

We used Sing, Spell, Read, and Write for phonics/reading at that age. All of my kids have been reading fluently at the end of kindergarten and we switch to Rod and Staff in 1st grade for reviewing phonics. We don't do a formal reading program after kindergarten until 3rd grade. Between the two, we just read regular books and talk about them. Usually chapter books and we'll alternate reading. When they are still working on it, they may read a sentence or two, and then I'll read for awhile. I try to choose sentences that go with their ability and progressively challenge them.

Hooked on Phonics. As for developing his ability to read for himself we make DS at least try to read everything on his own now. Signs, products, DVD menus, food labels pretty much everything is a learning opportunity. It's really helped him see how useful it is.

We do BOB books, Handwriting Without Tears and just started All About Spelling.

We use The Reading Lesson as well, and I love it. We started it in November, and we are about halfway through it now, and DD is doing really well with it. We supplement with easy readers like Bob books and Explode the Code. We just finished book 1 and are now on book 2.

For one of my kids Explode the Code and Sonlights list of readers did the job, for the other Hooked on Phonics is working. Every kid is different, you may have to try lots of things before you find what really works.

Oh nice, Explode the Code is one of the things I am using already.
Yesterday we read "The Hungry Caterpillar" and make a craft of it's life cycle and he loved it! I think I figured out Open Court is just too dry for us. I've seen those BOB books before and was wondering if they might work. Thanks for all the suggestions so far, going to go check out some of them!

My daughter was a natural reader, and I almost didn't have to teach her. I am teaching her brother now, and he just has so many better things to do. But I have several different reader sets for him to choose from, and I notice he does much better if Daddy helps him read.
