I would get a Mei tai. They can be used for newborns all the way to toddler. They are beginner friendly, don't have a lot of steps to put on and off, and are relatively inexpensive.
My favorite for sure are Kozy

Re: If you could only buy one carrier?

I am totally not an expert on babywearing, but I know a lot of moms are really happy with the Ergo carrier, and it can be worn lots of different ways. There is an infant insert you can get for when baby is really little, and then it can be worn til they are 45 lbs!

I'd go with a meitai! It's the only carrier I have used, birth through 18 months old!

Re: If you could only buy one carrier?

I used the Nojo ring sling with my daughter. A Maya Wrap ring sling with my first son(second child). A Maya Wrap ring sling with my second son(third child). I used(or plan on using as ds2 is only 21 months old) from birth to 4 years of age. So from 6 1/2 lbs to 40+ lbs. By the time my older kids were 4 years of age the slings had holes in them from 4 years of almost daily use.

I love the beco butterfly. I also used a wrap when dd was tiny but the internal harness of the beco makes it super easy for us.
