There's a "trap" on the bottom that gets clogged sometimes. I was having cleaning issues recently and followed the steps I found on Pinterest. When I took the cap off the "trap" there was a ton of crud under there. We also used a powder detergent and white vinegar as the rinse agent for a couple years. All of the sudden they stopped working well. I have had to switch to liquid detergent and jet dry.

Re: dishwasher cleaner

My husband has a very messy cleaning out the dishwasher method that works surprisingly well. When it starts getting messed up out dishwashing soap in the normal container that your wash dishes in. He filled it all the way full with Castile soap. Be prepared to just sit in front of the dishwasher for a bit and wipe up the bubbles that will be overflowing from inside. My husband didn't and our floor got water all under it. Dishwasher worked lots better though. I've done it before and patiently sat there with a few towels to keep water off the floor. He knows now though.

We figure all the extra suds must get areas clean that are usually blocked off

Re: dishwasher cleaner

We have hard water (I think) and to keep our dishwasher actually working we were using Dishwasher Magic, monthly, Lemi-shine every other day, and cheap dishwasher detergent. Found that switching to the Cascade Complete gel packs (NOT the powder or liquid) it actually works completely, all the time - and we can skip the Dishwasher Magic & Lemi-Shine. Sucks, but I buy on sale, with coupons, and now have a fully functioning dishwasyer.

Re: dishwasher cleaner

We have super hard water and gave up on our dishwasher. It never got our dishes clean, even when it was brand new. Now we just use it as a drying rack and hand wash our dishes. I'll have to look into some of the suggestions that were posted here.

Yeah, vinegar was nice... but unless I wanted to use it every time (which wasn't really an option) it wasn't a lasting solution.

Re: dishwasher cleaner

what ended up working here was vinegar rinse and biokleen wash.
