Re: Idea for starting Christmas gifts

LOL - I am almost out of my own personal, private stash of vanilla! I ordered beans a couple of weeks ago, but i can't decide which liquor to use. I made my last batch (years ago!) with Sailor Jerry's rum and it was to die for!

Buy a bottle of vodka and take exactly 2 shots out of it. If you can make it past the first step, the rest is easy. lol

Split the beans, throw them into the vodka bottle, replace the cap. Shake it up about once a week and you're good to go. I can't remember exactly how many beans I used....maybe 10? Someone else can chime in....my memory isn't good.

Re: Idea for starting Christmas gifts - making extract

Wow - Awesome idea here! Too bad DH won't let me buy vodka - he's afraid someone from church might see me going in/out of the liquor store and get the wrong idea.

I did about 12 beans for a regular size (750 mL?) bottle.

For easter I'm making family homemade limoncello and lemon mint sugar scrubs with coconut oil. Yum!

I have teh same problem as another poster. DH won't let me go buy the vodka. Also, what is that made out of? Would Vodka be Gluten Free? My brain is telling me it's potatoes but I"m not positive.

I googled it and it said it depends. Some are made from gluten grains, some not. Some people thinks that distillation removes the gluten even if they were made from gluten grains, some said they didn't. So.. That's not a good answer.

I plan on doing 2 beans sliced lengthwise for each 16-Oz flask. 9 months is plenty of time to get a good dark extract from just a few beans. I may also play with a rum-vanilla extract, vanilla sugar, or vanilla-cinnamon extract. So excited!
