Re: 38 week ultrasound- how accurate is the weight estimate?

I think it depends who is doing it. My friend was getting pushed for a c-section because her baby was estimated to be over 9lbs - she was induced right after and her baby was just over 5lbs So, they can be VERY off. Generally, I've heard it's a 1lb window, but obviously can be more than that.

Re: 38 week ultrasound- how accurate is the weight estimate?

the ultrasound tech told me that the closer to the due date, the more accurate they can really be with the weight estimate.

I'm really hoping it is true because at my 38 week ultrasound, they told me baby is probably 8lbs 2oz. So if I were to go into labor in, say, a week, he may be under 9 lbs. I would seriously rejoice if that were the case!

Re: 38 week ultrasound- how accurate is the weight estimate?

My last 2 were quite accurate...they were done by Maternal Fetal ultrasound techs though.

I was a doula for a mama being induced at 36 weeks for a IUGR baby that ended up at 6 1/2 lbs...way, way off. Baby ended up in the NICU with a collapsed lung.

Re: 38 week ultrasound- how accurate is the weight estimate?

My youngest was accurate. I was told a 7lb baby and had a 7lb 7oz baby.

My sister's middle child was way off. She was told an 8lb baby. Small for her. Weight was going to be the deciding facor of a home birth or repeat csection as her last baby had been 10lbs 5 oz. She was happy with an 8lb estimate and went for the home birth. She had a 10lb 13oz baby. So almost 3lbs off.

A friend was told she was going to have a big 8lb baby if she went 40 weeks so induced at 38 weeks. She had a tiny 5 lb baby. Again around 2-3 lbs off.

Re: 38 week ultrasound- how accurate is the weight estimate?

My Peri told me nearly exactly what my son would weigh when he was born via planned c-section at 38 weeks, at 30 weeks 6 days. He said he would weigh 8 lbs at birth and he was 8 lbs 1 oz.

So I REALLY think it depends on who is doing the ultrasound. Clearly my peri knows his stuff. I am not sure I would trust just anyone with telling me the weight of a child for purposes of inducing though.

Should add that my peri didn't tell me that my son's lungs would be slightly immature at that gestation. So I guess my peri isn't perfect. Darn!

Re: 38 week ultrasound- how accurate is the weight estimate?

DS2 weighed 5oz over their estimate from 5 days previous at 38w. But normal growth of 8oz/week says their estimate was very accurate.

DS3 weighed 2oz more than their estimate from 2 days earlier at 35w. Again, adding in for normal growth, these are very accurate.

Both were done by the US techs in my OBs office.

Re: 38 week ultrasound- how accurate is the weight estimate?

I've only had one ultrasound that late that actually measured weights.

I was pregnant with twins, and baby B was suspected IUGR. I had measurments every 2 weeks until birth.

2 days before I had them, they were estimated at 5lb 10oz and 4lb 8oz.

They were born at 5lb 11oz, and 4lb 8oz.
