I'm making my son a race car cake for his birthday. The plan was to use Oreos crumbled as the road. OOPS! We forgot the Oreos! And we live pretty far from a store so I can't just run back out, we don't have black food coloring. Anyone have some idea of what I can do??

please forgive all typos due to auto correct's lack of mind reading abilities. :-)

Sorry mods! I guess I should have put this in the kitchen section. That's what I get for posting before coffee!

I would try to mix all the colors to make black. Or make chocolate frosting for the road. Or gray. Doesn't have to be black!

Re: Help me save the birthday cake!!!

Chocolate chips? Graham crackers or the like for a dirt road track?

Re: Help me save the birthday cake!!!

You could use coffee grounds. or whirl up some frozen or even just really cold chocolate chips. Or you could just cut a track out of construction paper.

Coffee grounds are brilliant!! Lol.

Thanks for all the brainstorming ladies! DS has his heart set on a cookie track, and I found a "homemade Oreo" recipe I've got all the ingredients too!! Looks like a knot of baking in my near future!

I'd probably make a quick chocolate shortbread and crumble that up. The basic recipe I'd use would be about 1/2 cup softened butter, 1/2 cup sugar, 2 cups flour, 1/4 cup cocoa powder.
