Ds is 16- almost 17 months old. The last few days he has been dragging me to the toilet and trying to pull up his shirt and sticks his belly out. (Like he sees his brother doing) When I check him his diaper is wet and super warm like he has just peed. Last night I locked him out of the bathroom after he did this (he likes to splash in toilet water ) while I ran up to get a new diaper. While he was waiting for me he peed more on the baby gate.

Anyways, he's obviously showing sings of wanting to learn, but he can't talk. So do I just ignore this since communication is an issue? Or try to teach him??

What if you teach him a sign for "potty"?

Re: Can you potty train a 16month old?

I would let him. He doesn't have to be verbal. He is showing you by running to the potty. Let him sit on the baby potty and do a verbal or hand signal for him. Something that he can repeat and start using to get your attention.

Check out Elimination Communication here and on the internet. The "classic" EC noses are "pssst" for pee and gunting noises for poop.

Even if he is not out of diapers for a while. The experience he gains now could be very helpful when you are ready for him to be diaper free.

I though EC had to be started younger?? Hmm.

A sign is a good idea! He's not so good with sounds. He still only has 4 words and he thinks it has to be "worth" saying, and he won't really repeat sounds, but perhaps he would catch onto a sign.

please forgive all typos due to auto correct's lack of mind reading abilities. :-)

Yes you can! Also, get yourself the e-book "Oh Crap! Potty Training". I love being diaper free! And for EC, I got a lot from "EC Simplified."

Re: Can you potty train a 16month old?

I'd say let him take the lead. Do the hand sign for potty when he takes you there. Let him try to go and do the hand sign some more. If he's aware of his elimination and wants to use the potty, then don't stop him. He is communicating like others said, by taking you to the potty.
