Car Mechanic Opinions wanted!

I have a 2009 Kia Sedona that we've had for 3 years. It was 66K miles on it now. Every so often, it smells like something is burning. I've taken it to the dealer and they notice it as soon as we pull into the service center. It is very strong and can be smelled inside and outside. The only answer we've gotten in 3 years is "it's a coating that has to burn off the bottom of the car". Um, surely it would have burned off by now! The car is 4 years old! It's getting kind of nerve wracking driving around in a car that smells like fire.

Yeah sounds like some wiring issues I'd be pretty worried too - did you try googling? You'd be surprised... Otherwise keep taking it in

Just googled looks like its a common issue - going back to 2003 at least - try Kia Sedona burning smell

DH is a master technician. His first thought is the valve cover gasket leaking oil onto the exhaust. Is it always, every time you drive it? Or sporadically? Can you smell it as soon as you start up, or after the van warms up?

It's sporadically and only after you've been driving for 30 minutes or so.

Re: Car Mechanic Opinions wanted!

Wow, there's a story....(from the mechanic)....

First I'd say find a new mechanic though.

We have a kia Sedona, think it's 2003, never had a burning smell though. Worst issue was about a year ago all the under side of the heating/cooling tubing/coils had eroded so needed to be redone. I think something is going on with the heat now though as sometimes it's not getting hot enough when I turn the heat on, but then other times it's fine???

We have a bizarre mechanic set up. He owes FIL thousands(like probably 50k+), so he does our work for free, we pay for the parts. However we don't trust him as we don't think he always fixes what we know is wrong. Like DH had to bring the car right back to him one time after he drove a block as the problem wasn't fixed. This time(last week) he couldn't find what the problem was with a squeeking sound.

Re: Car Mechanic Opinions wanted!

The smell was so bad the first time we took it in the service people were literally running to the car because they thought it was on fire.

Without being able to look at it, DH does think it's burning oil. His thought is the valve cover gasket because it's directly above the exhaust manifold. He'd guess the *rear* valve cover gasket because it's not visible, and you'd have to pull the intake manifold to see it (just basing that off the layout of most V6 minivans).
