Re: Help me talk myself through this

I'd take him in to reassure him AND myself that he was aok. If it was an option, I'd take him to his ped that prescribed him the medication.

I was just assuming it was his ped that prescribed the medication. If not, where ever it was prescribed.

If I take him to the hospital, he will FLIP. Which I willing to deal with of course, but if it is anxiety, it will make it much worse. But I would feel better.
It was the prescribing dr that told me to go to the er next time.
I guess that is what we will do, as I would hate to be wrong.

Would he feel reassured to be told by doctors that his heart is ok?

He would, but getting him past his fear is another matter. I have been talking with him for the last 30 minutes trying to prepare him just in case. With his autism, it can make things a tad bit harder to see the end instead of the means.

Keen, i figured he would tell us to come in, but he just said to go to the er if it happens again

I bet he wants EKG. Wonder if he can't do it in office? My PCM can but the kids drs can't.

This dr office is pretty bare bones. He is the only ped in the county that will take tn care. I love them but they do not have high dollar equipment.

Re: Help me talk myself through this

Child psychiatry resident here: What specific medication was he placed on? Any other symptoms than just the heavy feeling? Does he seem dizzy or like he is about to faint when he's complaining. Is it caused by anything predictable? I agree that some of what you're describing could easily be anxiety but if he's on a new stimulant medication then it is important to make sure that it's not exacerbating an pre-existing or triggering a new heart rhythm problem. The likelyhood of this is low BTW in an otherwise healthy normal child but it's usually better to double check before choosing to ignore these sorts of symptoms.

Just read that he's ASD as well. If that's the case then hopefully he's been placed on one of the non-stimulant medications such as clonidine or guangacine as these tend to work better for ASD kids (fewer behavioral side effects) than the stimulants.

He is taking procentra, which is a stimulant. He has experienced a little dizziness, but the dr said that was normal for the first couple of weeks.
I honestly thought he was going to put him on a non stimulant, but he convinced me to go with this one. I have to say, other than this we love it,
Eta: he also says his heart beats fast also.
