Help me get my toddler back in cloth please!

I cloth diapered my oldest from 5 months until potty training so have cloth diapered a toddler before. Problem is I used fitteds/wool or pockets on him and I can't do that with this one. We have a new washer (well, a year old), an HE, and I haven't been able to get them clean and not stinking in no matter what I try! So I think I need to go with flats. I do have some and I can knit him wool to go over them but I cannot for the life of me get a flat to stay on him! I can't seem to do a decent fold. I won't use pins, they scare me but I do have boingo's and snappis. What fold would work best for a 2 1/2 yr old? He isn't super chunky but quite solid. He is use to sposies right now so I am worried if it's a nice tight fit it will bother him. Help please!

My toddler is quite solidly built and the kite fold is my favorite for him.

I really like a jelly rolled kite fold on big kids. Padfolding flats in covers is super easy, too. Is wool your only cover choice?

Will I need a doubler do you think? He isn't a particularly huge pee-er but he does poo about 3 times a day.

If you kite fold, I would say you will need a doubler. Premie prefolds work well as do GMD cloth-eez doublers. Mombecks has cheap osocozy doublers that seem nice, too.

We use a Thirsties Stay-Dry insert. They are great as a doubler and the microfleece makes any poo disposal quite simple - it just rolls off!

I'd get GAD semi-fitteds and stuff them with flats. Much easier and quicker on a toddler IMO. Ladybug was fine waiting for me to pin a flat on her, not so with Itsy.
