I guess to me it doesn't matter too terribly much, if it works for gas/hiccups it works, KWIM?

If they're happy and content, there's no need to try anything more. Like the hiccups - with DD1 she would get so angry and upset when she got the hiccups, start screaming about them and it was horrid, so we tried the gripe water and it helped her. But Piper doesn't seem bothered by her hiccups, so we aren't giving her anything for now, and won't unless she seems upset/hurt by them.
Same with gas bubbles/pain - if they aren't having troubles there's no need for anything more, but if they're in pain I'd rather give them something to help.

I would rather give them a little something to help them feel better and not be in pain, than have them crying and screaming, upset and hurting.
How ironic would it be if Piper hated her namesake, hiccups. I love the name Piper, but she will always be Hiccup to me!

In regards to the ingredients, my son could be in pain, screaming or maybe still in pain but distracted. If it were me I would take the distraction with pain rather than pain all by itself... We tried gripe water with ds1. He has no gut issues or any other health issues and if this ds gets worse I will be stopping at the store tomorrow.

I don't know - although with the ovol drops I know they really did break up the gas bubbles making it easier for baby to either burp or pass them through. You could feel the difference when massaging their tummy.
But I don't know with the gripe water and hiccups.

Whether it actually stops the pain or just distracts baby so they feel better, I don't care. I'll take either over them just laying there screaming.

I always want to type Hiccup still - my fingers go to it when I type her name!

Also I have taken Simethicone (the actual med in the gas drops) and I know that helps. Never tried gripe water on myself or my babies so don't know about that!

We just picked up the gas drops today actually, they worked wonders on DS1 and hopefully will help with Arie as well. He was fussy and hard tummy for 5 hrs last night, then slept restlessly for 3 hrs and was awake another 6 before finally dozing off fitfully. DH went to get the drops and he had them with his next feeding, and has been peacefully sleeping since. Hopefully they continue to work. Usually he sleeps pretty well (though days/nights are still a little messed up).

Back from one of the top gastro specialists at the children's hospital in SD.

Gripe water without fennel is plain ole sugar water. You can make it yourself. Buy the kind with the highest concentration of fennel
