But, no, I don't change my eating habits just for that reason while pregnant. I eat sashimi (from reputable sources) and raw-milk cheeses, rare steak, the occasional hot dog (nitrate-free), and salami on occassion. I'm not a big lunchmeat person normally, anyway.

However I get my meat from a farmer. I know his name, he knows my side of beef, lamb and side of pig's name. I get my raw milk, eggs (which I eat raw), and raw cheeses from a farmer also. He knows my name, and the name of the cows/chickens that we get stuff from. He also makes our bologna (our only lunch meat).

Now if we were to go out to a restaurant, even if I am cycling I will ask for things to be well done (so I don't get steak because I hate well done steak!!). To me there is a HUGE difference between getting something even at Whole Foods, vs. shaking the hand of the guy who feeds you. Grocery stores took this out of our vocabulary and I think that is sad... but that is a different thread.

ETA - This is my first pregnancy eating this way and I am happy. It is also my most high risk pregnancy to date (including triplets) so go figure!

Re: Do you go out of your way to avoid Listeria with all your Pregnancies?

I'm not a lunch meat fan so no issue there, but I do try to avoid raw sushi. I realize the odds are low, but since it can be deadly to the baby if you do get it, I'd like to be safe! Thankfully I have some favorite cooked rolls so I don't miss out on too much there. I do worry about it from lettuce and spinach, but I make sure I wash it well...don't want to give up those health benefits! I usually prefer my steak medium rare, but up it to medium for an extra layer of protection So I don't go extremely out of my way, but I do try to be aware and be safe where I can.

I don't worry about it. Risks are very low. I also consume raw milk while pregnant. (Gasp!) The horror!
