prefer the paci to the real deal???

The last few hours have been rotten here. Ben got supee fussy, crying, screaming. Tried feeding him and he did NOT want me at all. Gave him his paci and rocked and shhhh him and he calmed down a little. Took a shower with him and then tried to feed him, still no. He wants the paci. Shouldnt he be hungry? My boobs seem empty, though i know thats no indication. I pumped 6oz earlier today. Could this be tongue tie related....like delayed reaction to the clip? I gave him tylenol this afternoon whn he first became inconsolable.

Ideas?

Nipple confusion? I don't give DD a pacifier at all out of fear that it'll screw up our BFing.

He has been tummy tense. Hoping this passes soon.

Re: prefer the paci to the real deal???

Piper still doesn't like the paci - we can get her to take it for a few minutes, but she pretty quickly spits it out. And it's definitely not just falling out of her mouth, she really just doesn't like them.
But then last night she wanted to suck, but would cry and spit out the milk in her mouth, still didn't want the paci. I suppose we could try different ones - we've only tried gumdrops and nuks, but I don't want to spend the $$!

Anyways, it could be that he's just content sucking and not feeling hungry at that point, but I'd watch it for sure. If he continues to want the paci and not want to nurse I'd stop using the paci - they're helpful at times, but not worth messing up nursing for.

Re: prefer the paci to the real deal???

How old is he? If he's in the first week or so, I always have at least one night/day sometimes up to 36 hours straight where they almost literally don't want anything else but to nurse nurse nurse. That's the whole supply/demand thing. Happens again around 3 weeks. So if he's in the first few weeks at all, when those moments hit, I opt to nurse, not use the paci, so my supply will be fierce. After that though (again not sure how old your little guy is) I do use the paci once my supply is established more and we're past those first hungry weeks. HTH.

DDC. My doctor said that if they are hungry the pacifier won't pacify him. My son was a pacifier fiend and still is, but if he was hungry for boob when he was younger he would spit it out and fuss. I'm sure his tummy is just a little upset.

This was my first thought. Sucking helps them move their bowels.
