Best Sewing Machine for around $100????

It is time for a new sewing machine.....the dumb thing I have needs to be fixed again and will cost around $80 so my husband said to just look into a new one. What do you all think is a good one for around $100??? It doesn't need anything super fancy as I don't sew a ton.....but would be nice if it had a couple of fancy stitches. Preferably one I can purchase/order from Walmart as that's the closest place to where we are.

Thank you for any thoughts!

I'd recommend a refurbished heavy old metal machine (with a warranty!) rather than a new plastic one. Although the old machines do not have all the bells and whistles of some newer ones, they tend to be more reliable and easier to maintain. I sew on a 1954 Singer sewing machine for all my straight stitching, and switch to a 1960's model for zigzag and three step zigzag!

I agree with Marnie, a 60's Singer or Kenmore will be the best bang for your buck. With basic care and oiling that you can do yourself it should last years.

All cheap box store machines will be a gamble. You may get one that lasts years and gives you little trouble or you may be trashing it in a few months.

I have a Brother machine (the ce8080prw) that I purchased from WalMart about 3 months ago and have been sewing on it non-stop and it's wonderful. It has a ton of different stitches and it's very easy to use. My mother, who has been sewing for AGES, bought the same one about 8 months ago or so and has been using that more than her ultra-expensive Babylock - I've had nothing but good experiences with Brother, personally, and would definitely recommend one of their machines.

I have had 3 brothers and they don't seem to make it more than 6 months for me,but I also sew every night so maybe they just get too much use. I agree with the others about getting an older machine they are seriously the best. We found one of mine on craigslist for $75 with the original cabinet and tons of accessories. Mine belonged to the sellers mother and she was in a nursing home and he had no idea what it was or how much it was worth. The nice part about older machines is they are still readily available and unless you sew most people don't want them.

I had a very similar machine that I bought from Walmart for like $80. It wasn't that specific machine but very very similar. I can't for the life of me remember the model number, it was like the next step down from this one. Anyway, it was a great little machine, never had a problem with it. I only sold it because I bought the sewing and embroidery machine I have now.

If I only had $100 to spend, I would wait and at least double that to $200 and get a low end Janome, etc. I've owned a $100 machine before and it would never hold up to the kind of sewing I do now.
