Does the DMV/BMV keep your car title when you register it, new state etc

We just moved to Indiana, had to do our license(take knowledge test, boo), do the registration and title last week.

I just noticed in the paperwork they gave back that the title is not there - it was taken off the attached page from the bank.

Do they keep it?

If you have a bank loan for the vehicle then in my knowledge the bank keeps the title until it is paid off in full. At least that is how ours did it. Good luck

They could be issuing you a new title for the state you moved to. Does anything say on your paperwork that you have new title coming?

We own the vehicle outright. Hmmm.....I suppose they could be issuing us the title in this state. I will check DH's paperwork. It was a bit of a blur with two tired kids at that point.

We are awaiting the other car title from the bank.....or the release lien notice rather. So need to do that one too. We own it outright too.

I know we are waiting on the permanent license(they give paper temps), license plate so maybe that's the deal with the title too.

I'm going to assume the current state is holding the out of state title and they'll issue you a new title to reflect the correct state/Indiana

I hope so....makes sense as I had to call the other bank as I couldn't find the "release the lien to the title" letter they sent us and she asked if I wanted it for the state of Indiana.

We own both cars. Maybe it is the issuing for Indiana?

Hmmm.......I suppose I will have to call them

You're basically surrendering your old title to get an updated one. Since you don't have any lien against it, the DMV requires the actual title from you. When I moved here, the title situation was already taken care of with the bank I had the loan through. I think I had to fax in a request for them to send the original title to the DMV but once I paid off the car of course I got the title back from the bank with the correct state.

Yeah that.

Some states when you move make you surrender your license plates too. It is different everywhere. When I moved from Florida to Massachusetts I could keep my Florida plate. However when I moved the same car to New Jersey, I couldn't keep my Massachusetts plate. It just depends on the state.
