How much water?

How much water should my 7mo LO be drinking? She is BFed with 2-3 solid meals a day (oatmeal, br. rice, gr. beans, carrots, banana, avocado...). I've tried giving her water in a couple different sippy cups and in a bottle and she won't drink it. She will drink from a little plastic solo cup though. Her poops quickly went from all over the diaper to very plopp-able when I added the sometimes 3rd meal a day, which has me wondering if she's getting enough liquids.

From the phone.

Re: How much water?

My daughter also had ploppable poo once she was eating 3 meals a day, and she looooved water. So I don't think that should worry you, as long as she doesn't seem to be uncomfortable pooping (some grunting is normal). I don't think water is a big deal as long as she is nursing frequently. Just offer her water a few times a day in whatever cup she likes. If you haven't already, you could try a straw cup, those can work well for breastfed babies (and don't need you to help as much).

Re: How much water?

Thanks for the reassurance. I don't think she's constipated, but then again she's been very fussy the last few days. I don't know what's going on with her. Her poop isn't hard though, just very ploppable. During the week, she still nurses three times a day, and has three 4oz bottles a day at daycare, so she has only dropped one bottle with the addition of solids. I'll look for a straw cup. I hadn't thought of that!

Re: How much water?

My son is a year and never drinks water. He only gets breastmilk and solids. His poops are great - soft but not runny. If he's drinking enough breastmilk, he doesn't *need* water. Breastmilk is 88% water.

I'm glad there are more responses today because I was just questioning this again!

Baby doesn't need any water. If you think he's thirsty, you can let him nurse for a little bit to get the foremilk. And you don't need to cut out any nursing feeds unless you're trying to wean. 'Before 1 is just for fun' so he should still be getting the vast majority of his nutrition from you.
