guardianship advice

Hi all,
I am very new here, but I am in need of advice. My husband and I have recently been asked to take guardianship of my 7 year old 3rd cousin. She was in the care of her grandparents, andher grandfather (my great uncle) recently passed away leaving her with no where to go. She is in the care of her aunt now, but she is unable to keep the child long term. We are kind of her only option, and we have already agreed to take her. We have an 8 month old of our own. I don't really know what I'm looking for, I'm just really nervous and would like for someone to tell me it can work out.

Thank you so much. It helps so much to hear that.
She will be here in a little over a week, and I am starting to get really nervous.

Re: guardianship advice

A seven year old girl...she might be a great little mother's helper! I know my five year old foster daughter wants to do everything I do and desperately wants to be a mom one day. Have fun!

Has she made it to your home yet? I hope the transition goes as smoothly as possible. My youngest is 7...it's such a fun stage, IMO. He's still young enough to want and need cuddles but he also loves to help do anything he can to show his independence. My daughter has always been a little mama...she is nearly 12 now. I imagine she will want to help with your baby. <3

Re: guardianship advice

There needs to be more people like you! I was adopted legally at 15 by my second cousin. I went to live with her when I was 8. They are my parents; my mom and dad. They changed my life. What an amazing gift!
