Anemic options?

I was told the other day that I'm slightly anemic with a level of 11. something, and the nurse rambled off a pill I could take. By the time the doctor was in I forgot to ask him about other options, but I'll call to confirm on Monday. Anyway, what do you take or eat to help your iron levels? Seems like the easiest one is beef but I can't eat beef

Re: Anemic options?

Leafy greens, molasses, & nuts are all great for iron levels. I've heard great things about the Rainbow Light Mini Iron supplements...I haven't taken them myself, but they are less expensive than what my MW recommended to me. I take Feosol Complete. It's expensive ($20/mo), but I can get it at Target & Walgreens & it doesn't cause constipation.

I already eat fairly iron-rich foods and I still have had problems with anemia during both pregnancies. I am currently trying Floradix which is a liquid iron supplement. It doesn't seem to upset my stomach like the pills do but it doesn't taste great. I can't handle it on its own but I have been taking it mixed in with a little orange juice and it is fine this way.

Re: Anemic options?

I think what I took was called SloFe, or something like that. If you want an iron supplement just go to CVS and there will be a few options. The pharmacist should be able to help you too.

This is what my ob/midwives suggested.

Tasted awful but I do better with liquids than pills.

Lentils are an iron rich food.

Anecdotally, many people do well with floradix, although there's apparently nothing about it that is better than regular old iron pills according to my mw.

Floradix is actually better absorbed by the body than pills plus there are less side effects because of this. I highly recommend it and from my own personal experience know it works fantastic. It is true it doesn't taste the best but not too bad in juice. Try it, you won't regret it

Yes, many people swear by it being better-utilized/absorbed by the body. That is the only reason I gag the stuff down each day. I took iron pills while pg with DS and my levels still weren't great. Plus they made me extremely constipated and gave me stomach pains. The Floradix doesn't do this to me at all.
