abnormal cord blood test result

not sure where to put this, but i know you mamas have a lot of info about babies/birth. ive been out of the loop for a while as my youngest before this is 6 yrs. the doc called today and said that my 2 wk old's cord blood results came back abnormal and he will not tell us about the results over the phone. we have an appt. later today, but what in the world do they test for? what can they see? she looks healthy, has gained over a pound already (champion nurser), and is such a calm and good baby.

i cant find info about what the test for other than diseases i didnt have during pregnancy and i know my rh factor or whatever is normal. help? i feel sick.

Hmmm I wonder why they took a sample? The only thing I can think is maybe the pH was off and they are worried about a lack of oxygen? If any of the other things were abnormal you would be well aware by now.

Re: abnormal cord blood test result

We found out with the newborn screening tests that one of my youngest is a carrier of a genetic disease. She doesn't actually have the disease but she could have a child with it if her husband also is a carrier. I hope that's all it is or that it's nothing serious!

I'm so sorry you are going through this. Keep in mind that 90% of positives are actually false positive. Depending on your state, they have a very low threshold so they catch all potential cases. Also, not all babies with PKU need treatment. Some have a very mild case. I'm thinking of you and your little sweetie!

thank you for the well wishes. we are going to retest but in the meantime the doc referred us to a metabolic genetic specialist. apparently her abnormal result was for something called biotinidase deficiency--a genetic mutation my daughter would have to inherit from both my hubby and me which prevents her from being able to get biotin from her diet, ever.

argh. soooo stressful, but with daily treatment for life there should be no damage to her. i really wish the doc would have told us which disorder she had right upfront and on the phone. ive never been so worried in all of my life- i actually felt relief when he told us which disorder it was.

Oh mama! I hope you find some good support! I'm sure there is an online group somewhere for children with this disorder. I hope that eventually managing her diet will become routine. Please take care of yourself! Moms often neglect themselves when their children are sick, but you need to be healthy for the sake of your daughter. Sending you lots of love!
