Re: At what age?

At 3 1/2 I would say NO WAY OVER MY DEAD BODY! I wouldn't send my older kids away for that length of time let alone my toddler. They can call or Skype or text or IM my kids. I want to be the one rearing my kids not my parents.

I wouldn't even bother with a reasons why not. I would be demanding reasons why it is a good idea to give up your toddler for 2+ months at a time.

This precisely. And not out of the country until over 18 or with Dh or I.

We spent summers 7 states away from our parents growing up. My grandparents were retired though and were able to spend the whole 6 weeks with us. We started at 7 and 5 and went every year until I was 12. Then my brother went alone. He was 10 and went until he was 17.

Re: At what age?

I spent a month or two with my grandparents every summer starting at around 11-12, but they only lived a few hours away and my mom would still visit every other weekend or so. I had a blast, but still had some episodes of homesickness.

I think my kids would need to be at least teenagers before I could even think about it.

This. Is there any way that you or your DH could go as well? That would be the only way I'd consider it.

Wow. Yes. But not at 3.5.

DH is pretty adament about this as well. And he knows I'm not excited about it. He spent a lot of time with extended family growing up and he believes it's good. I agree, but mah babies!!!!!

Not sure what age I'll concede. But I figure I will let it happen. For us, it'll be like 2 weeks. But I understand the months since you're talking overseas. Sounds like an awesome experience. But 3.5 is too young for me. How would they even get there without a guardian?

Re: At what age?

My 18 mos old & 3 yr old just came back from 2 night sleepover at grandmas! They all had a blast.

However, that long, no parents/familiar in-real-life faces, and culture-shock, too... nah. I think I'd save the $$ now and make it worth the effort to send them for just 2-3 weeks when they are older (10yrs+) for a few years in a row. Have grandparents come this way in the meantime (so they can build the relationship on their own turf/comfortably).

Re: At what age?

My daughter is 6. I would have been comfortable at 4 for a week. This summer, 2 weeks would have been ok. But for the whole summer? No way! Now that she is in school, I want to spend time with her in the summer.

Re: At what age?

My 5 year old goes on 10-day vacations with my parents. Last year (4) they took her to Disney. This year they went camping. It was really hard being away from her for 10 days...No way could/would we do a month.
