$1 will be the standard here if DD would ever lose a tooth! She's 6.5 and very put out that she hasn't.

Re: What's the going rate for the tooth fairy?

We do a special gift for the first tooth and $5 per tooth after that. This was established when DD lost her first tooth unexpectedly and DH worked nights so wasn't home and we lived far from an ATM so I grabbed a toy I had stashed away for Christmas.
We don't 'do' the tooth fairy either. The kids think it's fun to leave a tooth under their pillow and find money in the morning, but they know it's me.

$3 for the first, and $1 after that.

Same here. Which came in really handy when the dog ate DD's second tooth recently. She lost it at school and brought it home in a little plastic box. But on her way out of the classroom, she fell and hurt her cheek. So when she got home we took her to Urgent Care, and left the box out on an end table. Got home to find the box chewed open on the floor, and no tooth. I think if she thought she had to provide an actual tooth to a fairy, she would have panicked.
