Cats and babies

I just. Recently got two Norwegian forest cats and they are awesome with my older kids but I'm terrified of them with a baby. Anyone else have cats?

Re: Cats and babies

I had a cat (well..we still do lol!) before I was even married to DH. We still have her..and when DS was first born..she pretty much left him alone. Mostly she still does..although she goes to him now for an occasional cuddle. She's never tried to scratch or anything..and has always been fine with him since birth!

Cats often go go for cribs because they're the highest thing in the nursery and cats just want to be at a point where they can look out. Have some taller furniture in the nursery.

We also kept the door closed for nap times. Problem solved.

We brought home a blanket with the baby's scent so the cats could get used to it.

We always keep the doors closed during nap/sleep time too. The cats love to sleep on the changing table in between though!

Mario cat would cuddle and knead baby when she sleeps if we let him. We keep doors closed during sleep. Mario generally stays away from awake and active crawling babymonster, but if little one manages to grab his fur he will bat/bite if it gets too rough. I don't have a problem with it, since it's his only defense and a natural consequence of being rough with an animal. He's never broken skin, just makes his warning known.

I've had cats my entire life. They never caused an issue with my babies

Re: Cats and babies

We moved into a house with two cats (one is a long hair cat). Unfortunately, DD is at the age where she is learning how to crawl and puts everything in her mouth so we have to vacuum frequently to keep her from picking up hair and putting it in her mouth. We put a blanket over her crib to keep the cats out when she's not in it. She loves to pull cat hair and they hiss at her. We just have to watch her more carefully when the cats are nearby.

Three going on for kids, a house full of animals including cats, and no one is worse for the wear yet We currently have three cats plus a foster cat and her three kittens. No one is remotely interested in the toddler, lol. As a baby they weren't interested either. I remember bringing home dd1 who was in her carseat. She sneezed as the cat came up to sniff her and the cat must have jumped a foot straight up in the air.

Re: Cats and babies

Be sensible and it shouldn't be a problem - gentle introductions, closed door (or cat outside) at naptimes and keep an eye out for allergies from the LO - my cousin had to give their cat away because their LO didn't agree with cats...
