Maybe TMI, but...

I've got white skin looking stuff on my nipple and it hurts to nurse. I think I had a cracked nipple and its healing, but whats the white stuff? I don't think its thrush

I had something that sounds like what you have. I think its called a milk blister. I used a hot wash cloth before and after nursing and it went away. Check kellymom. I'm pretty sure its called a milk blister. There might be more advice on there.

oh man, when dd first started nursing, my left nipple was covered in them, they hurt soooooooo much, I just grinned and went through the pain, the nurse told me that my nipples had to "get used" to the pain and that if I kept nursing they would go away. BUT OUCH!! they hurt like heck

Re: Maybe TMI, but...

I had the same issue and am on a daily basis still for the past month. I was quick to think that wasn't it until the pain had been so bad that I figured I'd try more than the warm compresses. I sterilized a needle and scraped/poked the top of it and had a geyser and the pain subsided slightly for a short time until more healed over it. Also when you've had a crack you are very suseptable to yeast infections on your nipple. These don't resemble thrush most times they just result in pain and major discomfort during and after feedings. What kind of pain are you having? Is it deep burning stabbing? If so try this so called "miracle cream" mix equal parts of polysporin, lotrimin AF and hydrocortisone cream (1%). Use this 3-4 times a day. I was just told to use this mixture by my lactation specialist after battling with doctors (LONG STORY)...It really does help and it can be yeast without you seeing any signs of it...

Re: Maybe TMI, but...

If you've been using gentian violet for thrush, it's not likely yeast. more likely just peeling skin from the healed crack. I have constantly peeling (and cracking when I'm not careful!) nips right now as I'm pregnant and nursing. I use antibiotic ointment when I know I won't be nursing for several hours (right after morning feeding, or at bedtime) - also, use lanolin! That will help with the dryness. Is the skin peeling off at all? Or just sitting there?

Re: Maybe TMI, but...

It's getting better and I used the GV again last night liberally and there is less pain today, no deep pain like I've had. Now it's just where the crack is. My assumption is it was yeast and I wasn't getting it with a thin layer of GV on a qtip. My daughter had quite a bit of yeast rash lately so I think we had it in our system. I'm going to use some probitics to try to kick it for good! Last night I SOAKED the qtip - so much so that my daughter had a purple tongue lips and she had a purple side of her chin where she slept and her shirt had a bit on it too I took a picture of her face it was so funny. Then I washed it off. Didn't want her to look like she had a bruise! I think the white is just a scab. It has gone away and then comes back. I haven't dealt with these oowie nipple issues in some time. Not with this baby so I forgot how to deal with it! Thanks for all the help! Here's hoping this is the last of it!

Glad to hear it's getting better! You can also add some GSE tablets with your probiotic. All through this pregnancy I've been dealing with an aweful cycle of dry and peeling, cracking, and thrush.. it's been SO painful nursing her! I simply MUST get my nipples healthy before baby is born!!
