how often do you double up your GMD cotton flats?

My DS is nine months old and a fairly heavy wetter. Do you think I should just always need to plan in doubling up to get longer than an hour or so with any kind of cotton flat?

If he's a heavy wetter, then yes. I quit flats by that age with ODD because she peed right through them in one pee, and doubling every single one seemed to defeat half the purpose of having flats. But if easy washing is your reason for using flats (and it's a great reason, don't get me wrong), then you'll probably need to add something to every one.

My yds is 11 months, a light wetter, and can use one small for 2 hours or 1 large for 3 (though we rarely go that long between changes). My ODS was a heavy wetter, but I never doubled up. Instead I changed more often. He potty trained at two, but there was always enough absorbency for one full pee.

ETA so like the pp said, depends on why you are using them.

I use GMD large flats, and instead of doubling flats, I use hemp doublers. I cannot tell you how much easier it makes laundry and diaper changes. Don't know what I would do without my hemp.

One padfolded is enough, but when folded in the diaper bag fold I use a osocozy wipe as a doubler. She can do 2 to 2.5 hours with it, but the diaper is loaded!!

She is 17 mo

The only time I need to double them up is at night. One GMD flat padfolded lasts our average-wetter 2yo LO fine during the day with normal changing times.

This! Whenever I try it without a hemp doubler - even pad folded, it gets completely drenched. Quickly. We change very frequently in general during the day--it's not like we're trying to keep her in them for 2-3 hours.

Try the hemp doublers!!! My son is a fairly average wetter I think, but a large flat in a mini kite fold with two small hemp doublers will last him 12 hours at night, and it's not always completely soaked in the morning and it never leaks. If I use on during the day, a small flat is often barely damp after a couple of hours.
